Appointments & Eye Examinations

How often should I have an eye test?
Most adults benefit from an eye examination every 1–2 years, or sooner if you notice changes in your vision or have specific eye health concerns. Your optometrist will advise the most appropriate recall interval for you.
What happens during an eye examination?
Your appointment includes a comprehensive assessment of your vision and eye health. This may include prescription testing and advanced diagnostic testing where clinically appropriate. We take the time to understand your visual needs and lifestyle before making recommendations.
How long does an eye test take?
Please allow 30–60 minutes, depending on your individual needs and whether additional testing is required.
Do I need to prepare for my appointment?
If you currently wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring them with you. If you wear contact lenses, you may be advised on specific wear instructions prior to your appointment.
Can I drive after an eye exam?
Yes, you can drive after an eye exam.
Do you dilate eyes?
n some cases, dilation may be recommended to allow a more detailed examination of the eye. Your optometrist will discuss this with you on the day if required. If your eyes are dilated, your vision may be temporarily blurred, and you may experience increased light sensitivity. For this reason, we do not recommend driving after a dilated eye examination. Please arrange alternative transport.

Fees, Medicare & Health Funds

Do you bulk bill?
No. Spex Design Optometrist is a private billing practice. Our comprehensive consultation fee is $125, payable on the day.
Is there a Medicare rebate?
If you are eligible, a Medicare rebate of up to $66.50 can be processed on your behalf at the time of payment, subject to Medicare rules and frequency.
Does private health insurance cover my eye test?
Private health insurance typically applies to optical items such as frames, lenses, prescription sunglasses, and contact lenses, not the consultation itself.
Can I claim glasses or lenses on the spot?
Yes. We can process most private health claims in-store if you bring your physical or digital health fund card. Alternatively, we can provide a detailed receipt for you to claim directly with your fund.

Prescriptions

How long is my prescription valid for?
Prescriptions are valid for a specific period, as advised by your optometrist, to ensure accuracy and eye health.
Can I use my contact lens prescription for glasses (or vice versa)?
No. Spectacle and contact lens prescriptions are different and are not interchangeable.

Contact Lenses

I’ve never worn contact lenses before — what’s involved?
Contact lenses require additional measurements and assessment to ensure correct fit, comfort, and eye health. New wearers require a fit and teach appointment.
Are contact lenses safe?
When prescribed correctly and worn as advised, contact lenses are safe.
What if my contact lenses feel uncomfortable?
If discomfort persists, stop wearing the lenses and contact us so we can assess and assist.
